My Phone, My Frenemy

Rev. Jamie Hinson-Rieger

“We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, having nothing important to communicate.”
– Henry David Thoreau

In the last few years, stories about the addictive nature of cellphones and social media have become more commonplace in the media. Both are identified as significant contributors to mental health problems and negative well-being, particularly for young people. Arguably, they have played a role in destabilizing our democracy itself. But also, I love my phone, and I rely on it for so many important things. What do we do about it? This sermon discusses the issue generally but will also offer some useful hacks that individuals and families can try to get a handle on phone use in their own life.
